The Dos And Dont’s Of Hot Tub Ownership

As first-time buyers of a hot tub it’s important that you familiarise yourself with the dos and don’ts of hot tub ownership. There are many guides that can provide you with in-depth help; although, here we decided to provide a small list of important facts for you to remember – welcome to hot tub ownership!

Do shower before entering the hot tub.

-Showering before you use your hot tub is something that is usually overlooked, however, it’s rather important – especially to those who are maintaining the hot tub.
Without showering, you’re allowing extra contaminants to enter the water, thus creating more bacteria to maintain afterwards.

Do supervise all that use your hot tub, especially children.

-Very young children aren’t allowed in the hot tub. However, older children must have a good eye kept on them to ensure they’re not diving or doing anything dangerous within the hot tub.
This also applies to adults that are using your hot tub, as some may have had a drink previously and can be rather reckless.

Do limit the time you spend within the hot tub.

-Firstly, it’s very important that before you use a hot tub you consult your doctor, if you’re pregnant or have any medical conditions.
The limit of your soak will depend on the temperature of your water. The average amount of time you should soak is 15-20 minutes, you may then have a break to cool down and you can re-enter the spa. If your temperature is rather low then the time period can rise to 30 minutes.

Do clean your water.

-If you’re following your maintenance schedule then you already know the importance of your water’s health.
Make sure that you test your water to check the pH and Alkalinity levels are balanced, as well as adding your chemicals to sanitise and clean your water. Or allow a professional company to maintain your spa for you, like us at Scunthorpe Hot Tubs.
Remember it’s vital that you have to change your water every few months.

Do clean your filters.

-Cleaning your filters is as important as cleaning your water. If your filters are not maintained every week, it’s possible that it will allow bacteria to enter your spa – no matter how much you prioritise the water chemistry.
You must also deep clean your filters every few months to remove any stubborn bacteria.

Don’t drink excessive amounts of alcohol.

-Everyone loves a nice drink as they relax within their spa, but too much can be very dangerous.
The warm water dilates your blood vessels which contributes to high levels of intoxication, meaning you can get drunk a lot faster and resulting in careless use of the spa – with possible damage to yourself.

Don’t eat within your hot tub.

-Be very careful if you decide to snack whilst you relax. Any crumbs or food particles that drop into your water are unwanted bacteria. This can lead to your filters clogging up and internal damage – a lot more maintenance than you need.

Don’t turn up the heat.

-After a while of relaxing, you may get used to the temperature of the hot tub and decide you want to turn up the temperature. Remember that having the temperature over the recommended setting can put you in danger; putting a lot of strain on your body.

Don’t use your hot tub in bad weather.

-Keep an eye on the weather reports to make sure that when you decide to take a dip, you won’t be interrupted by bad weather – bad weather can mean danger.
Most importantly, avoid using your spa during storms and the water is a good conductor of electricity – this can result in electrocution.

Don’t use a shovel to remove any snow from your hot tub cover.

-If a lot of snow lands on your hot tub cover it’s vital you remove it – using a broom or a brush. A shovel would normally be what we need to remove snow, but there are risks of using a shovel on our cover.
There’s a possibility that the blade from the shovel can cut into the cover, ripping the vapour barrier, thus causing the cover to hold water – especially if the snow is thick. This results in the lifespan of the cover to reduce dramatically and stopping the cover’s ability to insulate your spa.
