8 Surprising Myths About Hot Tubs

Over the years, we’ve seen loads of myths and misconceptions about hot tubs. Some of these can seem off-putting and make people feel uneasy about getting their own hot tub. Without knowing more, it can be difficult to tell what’s true and what’s not.

In this blog, we’ve rounded up some of the most common myths out there, and explained why they’re just not true.

1.

More jets means a better hot tub

Many people think they should go for the hot tub with the most jets, assuming that would provide the best experience. However, more jets doesn’t necessarily mean a better experience – what’s more important is the placement and power of the jets.

In fact, some of the best spas on the market have between 40 and 60 jets. If they had 100 or more, the power would be shared between them all, meaning each one was weaker and less satisfying.

When you search for your dream spa, be sure to look at the placement of the jets and the strength of them; too many can actually be uncomfortable for your muscles and leave you unsatisfied. Correct placement can mean a luxurious and relaxing experience every time.

At Scunthorpe Hot Tubs, we’ve carefully selected all of our hot tubs and work only with award-winning designers in the UK, which makes this search easier for you.

If you’re unsure, get in touch – don’t be afraid to ask!

2.

Maintaining a hot tub takes a lot of time and effort

Don’t be put off purchasing a hot tub because you’re worried about the maintenance. It’s can actually be a simple process that you’ll pick up very easily.

All you need is a well-informed maintenance schedule, the right chemicals and tools – and consistency!
If you’re uncomfortable maintaining it yourself you can also purchase a maintenance plan from a company like Scunthorpe Hot Tubs who will send experienced engineers to ensure your hot tub is clean, healthy and in good
working order.

3.

You can save money by purchasing a cheap hot tub

If you decide to purchase the cheapest hot tub you can find, you may at first think you’ve saved money but find you’re in for a bumpy ride!

Cheap manufacturers are known for cutting corners to supply simple and affordable spas, but this can come at the cost of long-term problems and recurring maintenance issues. You may end up spending a staggering amount on energy costs and repairs; due to the lack of insulation, energy-efficient engineering, and poor-quality build.

Ask to see what’s going on behind the side panels, and check what insulation the hot tub has. The build quality and insulation will make all the difference to your wallet long-term. This is especially important with current rising home energy costs.

Our team at Scunthorpe Hot Tubs are passionate about our products, we only supply spas that we would personally vouch for and don’t associate with any poor quality products. You can be confident when buying with us that the spa you’re getting is of the highest quality, and comes with an inclusive warranty.

4.

The chemicals in the hot tub will irritate your eyes

Bromine and Chlorine are the chemicals typically used in hot tubs to ensure the water is clean and free of bacteria.

These chemicals, when balanced correctly, do not irritate unless you’re allergic to them. If you do get any irritation from the water then make sure you test your spa, as the balance of the water may actually be off!

5.

Hot tubs are unaffordable

Some people who want a hot tub are put off by the price, £5000, £7000, £9000. It can be very intimidating for those on a tighter budget, resulting in buying a cheaper spa or an inflatable one that may end up costing more in the long run.

There are good quality hot tubs out there to suit your budget, our range starts at just £2,495 and many companies like ourselves now offer finance, which provide you with several affordable options so that you can get your dream spa at a price that suits you.

6.

The hot water and filters keep the hot tub clean without maintenance

Do NOT believe this myth for a second!

It’s so important that you take good care of your hot tub so that no harmful bacteria make their home in the water – damaging both your spa and your health. The temperature of the water is not enough to clean or sanitise your spa – if it was you wouldn’t be able to touch it!

Stick to your maintenance schedule, add the recommended chemicals and ensure you change your water, clean your filters, test your water, and deep clean your spa when needed!

7.

It’s likely you’ll catch an infection from a hot tub

Hot tubs that are looked after do not cause infections.

Cleanliness is a serious matter. Bacteria can only form if the hot tub isn’t cleaned properly, which can lead to disease or infection. This includes a bacteria called Legionella that causes Legionnaires’ Disease.

However, as long as you remember to clean your hot tub and stick to your maintenance schedule, you’ll be free from any diseases or infections.

8.

You can use the chlorine tabs for a swimming pool in your hot tub

Maintaining your pool and spa are very different and require different water balances.

Pools tend to have lower pH levels than a hot tub. Using the same chlorine tabs can result in corrosion of the metal in the plumbing due to the levels of Chlorine being too high.
